Trinity appoints Chief of Medical Staff | News, Sports, Jobs


Dr. Scott Knutson, an emergency physician and frequent member of Trinity Health’s leadership team, has been elected Chief Medical Officer of Trinity Health.

Knutson was selected by his peers and confirmed by Trinity’s board of directors. Dr. Casmiar Nwaigwe, Deputy Chief of Staff, and Drs. Timothy Bedell and Chittaranjan Routray, both full members. Dr. Jeffrey Sather will continue to serve as outgoing Chief of Staff.

Knutson will lead a medical team of more than 250 primary and specialty care providers serving residents of Minot and northwestern North Dakota. As Chief, he will take a leadership role in efforts to ensure quality medical care and will be a key leader in reviewing processes of care and advising the health system on ways to improve programs and clinical services.

“It is an honor to be elected chief of staff” Knutson said. “This is a great opportunity and comes at an exciting time as we prepare to open a new healthcare campus and medical district that will help us achieve higher levels of quality in a patient-centric facility and family.”

A graduate of the University of South Dakota Medical School at Vermillion, Knutson practiced at Minot Air Force Base from 1998 to 2002 as a flight surgeon for the 23rd Bomb Squadron. He completed his family medicine residency at the UND Family Medicine Center in Minot, where he received the William J. Buckingham NDAFP Award and the 2004 Minot Community Preceptor Family Medicine Resident of the Year Award. .

In 2005, Knutson joined Trinity Health and continues to practice as an emergency physician. He has held numerous leadership and committee positions, having previously served as Chief of Staff from 2014 to 2018, and he continues to serve on the Board of Directors. Knutson is also a clinical instructor at UND’s School of Medicine and Health Sciences, most recently serving as Dean of Northwestern Campus. He is a member of the Minot Region Chamber EDC Military Affairs Committee and Honorary Commander of the 5th OMD Support Squadron.
