ThedaCare postpones non-emergency elective surgeries due to influx of COVID patients

GREEN BAY, Wis. (WBAY) — ThedaCare says its medical system currently has a record number of COVID-19 patients. As a result, it is immediately postponing all non-emergency elective surgeries in all of its seven hospitals.

ThedaCare says surgery teams and healthcare providers decide on a case-by-case basis which surgeries can be safely postponed for up to a few weeks, once ThedaCare has adequate staffing. Surgery dates may be pushed back if a patient’s condition changes. Urgent surgeries and outpatient surgeries will continue.

The patients concerned will be contacted by their healthcare teams to reschedule their surgery.

ThedaCare says the decision was based on factors including hospital capacity, staffing and patient conditions. “This decision was made with the utmost concern to protect our patients, team members and communities,” said Dr. Michael Hooker, Chief Medical Officer of Acute Care.

“In addition to seeing a record number of COVID patients in our system…we are also experiencing some of the highest absence rates due to illness or exposure to the coronavirus,” said a statement from Senior Vice President Lynn. Detterman, noting that they need healthy caregivers to care for the patients filling hospital beds.

“Throughout the pandemic, we have been dedicated to caring for people with COVID in addition to providing safe acute care for chronic illnesses and serious medical conditions such as heart attacks, strokes, trauma and cancer treatments,” added Dr. Hooker.

ThedaCare says it predicts “COVID-19 cases will continue to rise over the next two to three weeks.” He blames the highly contagious omicron variant. It also says nearly 4 out of 5 patients in its hospitals and intensive care units are unvaccinated.

The healthcare organization has appealed to the community to help slow the spread of the virus by getting the vaccine or a booster shot, wearing a mask and social distancing outside your home and staying at home. home if you feel sick.

We’ll have continued coverage of ThedaCare’s decision tonight on Action 2 News.
