Over 200 Goa Medical College (GMC) staff have tested positive for Covid. On Sunday, Goa reported seven Covid deaths, which is the highest of the third wave for the state.
The state has recorded 3,232 positive cases. On Sunday, 31 people were hospitalized due to Covid. At GMC, of those who have tested positive, more than 100 are medical residents and consultants.
Three GMC department heads have also tested positive for Covid. According to the sources, the functioning of the hospital will be seriously hampered if an emergency plan is not drawn up. The super-specialized block is heavily occupied since 200 out of 300 beds are occupied.
Dr Shekhar Salkar, a member of the Goa government’s expert committee on Covid management, said the situation was under control. “The number of hospitalizations is lower in the third wave. Once GMC is over 50% occupancy, we will activate district hospitals in South and North Goa. Of seven patients who died on Sunday, six had not taken vaccines,” he said.
Salkar added that the next 10-12 days are important for Goa. “People should follow COVID-appropriate behavior. Cases may increase in the next 10 to 15 days. More than elections, jatras (religious gatherings) attract crowds. The Election Commission has imposed restrictions on campaigning and therefore we are not holding large gatherings or rallies.
