Newport Beach DISC Surgery Center Earns Fifth AAAHC Accreditation

Drs. Robert S. Bray, Jr. and Grant D. Shifflett Perform Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery at DISC Surgery Center in Newport Beach

The Newport Beach DISC Surgery Center has been reaccredited by the Accrediting Association for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC).

For the fifth consecutive time, DISC’s Ambulatory Care Center has undergone and passed the AAAHC’s rigorous inspection, meeting nationally recognized standards for the delivery of quality health care, as determined by a independent external evaluation process. This will extend DISC’s accreditation for another three years and validate DISC’s ongoing commitment to excellence in patient care through its industry-leading safety protocols and benchmarking.

Since opening in 2011, DISC Surgery Center in Newport Beach has performed more than 2,400 spinal procedures with zero surgical site infections and a 97% patient satisfaction rate. Between 2017 and 2021, the center grew its volume by more than 200%, with the main growth drivers for high-acuity spine surgery previously being confined to hospitals.

“Early on, we saw an opportunity to not only migrate the full spectrum of spine care to the outpatient setting, but also to do it in a safer way and with better patient outcomes,” said Robert S. Bray, DISC Founder and Neurological Spine Surgeon, Jr., MD “DISC has developed methodology and benchmarking that has truly set a new standard for high-acuity spine care in ASC. We are proud to see this effort recognized by 10 years of continuous accreditation from the AAAHC.

DISC’s Ambulatory Surgery Center provides a safe and efficient operating environment for its more than 30 physicians, including some of the nation’s top spine and orthopedic surgeons. This centre, which prides itself on its quality care, continues to surpass national benchmarks.

While more than 6,100 ambulatory healthcare organizations across the United States are accredited by the AAAHC, screening is completely voluntary and not all CHWs that undergo the rigorous evaluation are accredited. The AAAHC credentialing process involves a thorough self-assessment and on-site investigation by expert AAAHC investigators – physicians, nurses, and administrators who are actively involved in ambulatory health care. The survey is advisory and educational, showcasing best practices to help an organization improve its care and services. For more information about AAAHC, visit www.aaahc.org.
