A Coral Gables doctor’s “failure to operate correctly and safely” resulted in the death of a Brazilian patient who underwent butt lift surgery, according to the Florida Department of Health.

It’s in the Florida Surgeon General’s Emergency Restriction Order (ERO) on the license of Dr. John Sampson, who the state said “performed unauthorized plastic surgery procedures” at the Seduction Cosmetic Center, 4910 SW Eighth St. The publication of the ERO on Thursday will likely be followed by an administrative complaint which initiates disciplinary proceedings.

Sampson’s online license profile shows no other disciplinary cases since its initial issuance on October 13, 2014. Sampson, 64, has also been laid off in Michigan, Maryland, Texas and the District of Columbia.

According to the online license profile, the Coral Gables site of Seduction is licensed for “surgery with moderate / conscious to deep sedation”. Sampson is listed as the designated physician.

“Seduction reported that Dr. Sampson practiced at Seduction, but did not perform surgeries,” said the ERO. “At any time relevant to this order, Dr. Sampson was not authorized to perform surgeries at Seduction.

“Between April 2021 and June 2021, Dr. Sampson performed unauthorized plastic surgery procedures at Seduction. “

Sampson could not be reached for comment and Seduction’s offices were closed on Sunday.

Bad Brazilian butt lift

In the form of liposuction surgery commonly referred to as “Brazilian butt lift”, fat is sucked from the abdomen and back through a tube called a “cannula” and then inserted into the buttocks. There should be no contact with the organs.

There were enough patient deaths from buttock lift operations in Brazil before 2019 that the Florida Board of Medicine issued an emergency rule banning the injection of fat into the intramuscular or submuscular area of the muscles. buttocks. It became a formal rule in March 2020.

On June 16, 2021, a woman the ERO calls “Patient ER” came to Seduction for a Brazilian butt lift by Sampson.

“By taking fat from the trunk of the ER patient, [Sampson] repeatedly punctured the ER patient’s abdominal wall and lacerated her liver, bladder and intestines, ”said the ROS.

Then, during the fat transfer, says the ERO, Sampson “repeatedly inserted the cannula into and through the ER patient’s gluteal fascia. Dr Sampson repeatedly inserted fat in and under the gluteal muscles of the ER patient.

ERO says heart problems hit ER Despite best efforts at Seduction and later Coral Gables Hospital, she died aged 33.

ERO says medical examiner found fat particles in his heart; globules of fat mixed with blood clots in the arteries that carry blood from the right side of the heart to the lungs; and fat globules in the “peripheral airways of all lung lobes”.

She died, the medical examiner found, of pulmonary embolism, blood clots in the lungs.

“Dr. Sampson’s commission of so many violations during a procedure, resulting in the death of the patient, indicates that he is unable to perform these procedures safely,” said the ERO.

The ERO says John Argyle Gilmore Sampson is now banned from performing liposuction or buttock fat graft surgeries.
