Lunchtime Eye Procedure Makes You Look More Awake, Plastic Surgeon Says
Pasadena, CA plastic surgeon Lily Lee, MD considers eye lift to be one of the “great procedures” in plastic surgery. “I think it’s great because the eyes are usually the first thing people see. It’s interesting because when I do rhinoplasties sometimes patients say that no one really noticed that something was different! A rhinoplasty is very dramatic from the profile, but when someone looks at you from the front, which is how most people look at you, they mostly notice your eyes. It’s a procedure that when done right doesn’t look like it’s finished, but people will say you look a little more awake, that you look a little happier, that you look a little brighter.
“It’s not like you’re really changing a lot of things. I have a lot of patients who come to me and say, “I don’t want to look like a deer in the headlights,” and I tell them, “Don’t worry, because we’re not paying attention to your eyebrows. Usually that deer look in the headlights comes from an overly aggressive front facelift. With an eye lift, this type of “pulled” result is almost impossible. Just the pure eye lift in itself – it’s impossible to make you look like a deer in the headlights.
Once in a lifetime
“The best candidate will definitely have something to remove in terms of excess skin on the eyelid. Often people also ask, “How long is this going to last?” If it’s done right, you really shouldn’t have to worry about it, the skin won’t grow back. If it’s done right, you only need to do it once, maybe a second time, years, years, later, decades later. It’s really not one of those things that we want to do over and over. “
“If we can prove that the excess skin is blocking your division of land to a point where it’s dangerous, it is absolutely true that it can be taken care of by insurance. I made my father’s eyes several years ago. When he came back to me for a postoperative appointment, he told my mother, who was sitting in the car, that he could see the street lights better. It was two o’clock in the afternoon!
“I don’t mean it’s an easy operation, but the recovery is not difficult, and we have a few tips we can do to make it even easier. Really, the thing that takes the longest is the bruising, which can really take the longest to resolve. In terms of healing, the eyes are a really privileged area where the incision heals very quickly. There really isn’t much pain that comes with it either. I even stopped prescribing narcotic pain relievers with this surgery. I would say it’s just the swelling and bruising that is bothersome. We have a lot of little tips and tricks that we incorporate to try and minimize this as much as possible. The surgery itself probably lasts maybe 20 minutes per eye. It is not a very long operation. My husband is an ophthalmologist, so he had cataract surgery. Compared to that it’s, I guess, pretty long, but compared to a lot of plastic surgery, it’s pretty straightforward and it’s always outpatient, unless we combine it with a lot of other surgeries.
