How long is too early to have a facelift?
Houston, TX plastic surgeon Henry A. Mentz, MD has been practicing for approximately 30 years. “In the early years of my practice, patients who came in for a facelift mostly seemed to need a facelift. They were generally 65 years of age or older and showed significant signs of aging. Most exhibited all four categories of aging: changes in skin quality such as age spots, fine lines and large pores, sagging skin manifested by sagging around the eyes, cheeks and neck, sagging soft tissue when deep tissue sags like the eyebrows, jowls and neck and many had loss of volume with hollows in the temples, eyes, cheeks and around the mouth. Today, patients’ views on aging and appearance have certainly changed and the goals of staying young are more important. More often than not, women want to stay 35 years old with minimal signs of aging and that’s fantastic. “
Have you seen the average age of a facelift patient grow younger?
“When I first started practicing – and you have to understand that this is Texas and the Texas sun is strong; and as a result, sun damage to the skin is quite widespread – many patients interested in facial rejuvenation at the time seemed rather thirsty. Some patients showed signs of aging accompanied by weight loss and gain affecting the face; not to mention the fact that treatments like Botox Cosmetic and filler weren’t as common. These patients came mainly because they appeared to be 10 years older than their friends who were the same age.
In my experience, these were more difficult patients as more detail was needed to achieve a satisfactory result.
For example, these patients benefited from complex procedures that went beyond a simple facelift such as eyebrow repositioning, cheek soft tissue elevation, neck muscle suspension, volume restoration with fat grafting, and rejuvenation. skin with lasers to name a few. To achieve a refreshed and younger appearance, the procedure required the layering of different techniques using a single strategy, such as the original firming facelift, creating an overly stretched and windblown appearance as the others problems such as altered skin and hollow were not treated.
Today, patients are more invested in their appearance and focus on keeping their youth. Now it has become a much more satisfying experience for the surgeon and the patient as they arrive earlier and use preventative treatments such as injectables, facials, mini lasers, and radio frequency treatments for maintenance and are turning to mini-lifts and small surgical devices. adjustments before aging becomes apparent.
How much would you say, on average?
“I will do around 150 full facelifts and over 1,000 other facial rejuvenation and refinement procedures per year. I still do a lot of mom’s makeovers too. I think, in part, COVID has added more demand for facial rejuvenation. There are several parts to this equation. Number one: Spouses and caregivers virtually work from home and can help with recovery, which is a big plus. The second thing is that with the shift to a more virtual society, people are paying more attention to their appearance in front of the camera and often feel that what they see is not as flattering as it is. would like.
Younger patients who work in the now virtual office space say, “I really don’t like the way I look. I am actually talking to my friend who is 50 years old and she looks 10 years younger than me. What can I do to reduce the signs of aging a little?
It is for these reasons that we are now seeing patients who are just starting to show their age and it makes it much easier to achieve an aesthetically pleasing result. For me personally, this overall development has increased patient satisfaction and has been a lot of fun and exciting! “
Are patients coming for different procedures now?
“Yes, there are now great opportunities in cosmetic facial surgery because it has always been a creative and evolving specialty. I think Instagram and social media in general have created a bit more buzz for these branding procedures. Patients know their options better, and people are more comfortable sharing their experiences and therefore more open to trying new things. Most skilled facial surgeons today combine a multitude of different surgical and non-surgical procedures to improve and / or maintain a patient’s overall outcome. There are a lot of cool things today that make cosmetic surgery more satisfying! For example, InMode devices, Morpheus8 and FaceTite, all newer radio frequency technologies that are safer and more predictable than older versions. These devices are very popular right now because they provide more opportunities for patients who are in between. While these additional procedures are beneficial, I think in the end what is most powerful is proper assessment and personalized recommendation.
I predict that in 2021 and 2022 we will see an explosion in facial rejuvenation and cosmetic surgery and I am excited about what is to come.
In your opinion, is there something people should understand about the “right age” for any procedure?
“When you look at patients, it’s not so much chronological age that defines what they need. This is really the age that they appear. I just finished a 38 year old female patient who is going through menopause and experiencing all the associated changes. She was frustrated that her body and face had changed so much, making her look older than she actually was. So many things can affect apparent age, such as stress at work, divorce, family illnesses, weight fluctuations, and pregnancy. The experience of life can lead to unexpected changes over which we have no control. You are going to inherit the genes from your parents, and if your parents look 60 and are 100, you will be in great shape. However, most people are not so lucky. You can’t get around your genetic makeup or your life experiences, and you can’t get around this plan that God has given you, so it’s nice to be able to feel good about yourself inside and out and to have options to improve. Our motto is “The best of you is what we do”.
