Duke, WakeMed and Kindred have applied for a Certificate of Need with the State of North Carolina to move 52 licensed or approved inpatient rehabilitation beds from Duke and WakeMed to the new inpatient physical rehabilitation center. Pending state approval, the new inpatient rehabilitation hospital will provide care to adult patients in western and southern Wake County and surrounding areas with disabilities, including those resulting from a medical condition. serious medical condition such as stroke or orthopedic injury and deconditioning after surgery or illness.

“With the extreme growth of the region, there is a need for easy access to inpatient rehabilitation services, especially for patients in western and southern Wake County and surrounding areas, ”said William J. Fulkerson Jr., MD, executive vice president of Duke University Health System and professor of medicine at Duke University School of Medicine. “Serious illnesses and injuries make travel difficult, especially among the elderly. This joint venture provides people living in these communities with access to high quality inpatient rehabilitation services close to their homes, as well as increased access to rehabilitation services for patients across the region.

“The leaders of Duke and WakeMed recognize the need to provide patients in western Wake County and beyond with better access to the high quality care they deserve while keeping pace with the rapid growth of our region ” said Donald R. Gintzig, President and CEO, WakeMed Health & Hospitals. “The tri-company between Duke, WakeMed and Kindred is an innovative and cost effective way to provide the necessary inpatient rehabilitation services to residents in our area.

Long time to come

For years, doctors, leaders, nurses and rehabilitation therapists from Duke and WakeMed have worked together in different capacities to help adults and children recover and join the community after serious illness or injury. They have long discussed how to work together to expand access to high-quality inpatient rehabilitation care in a cost-effective manner and look forward to working with Kindred to realize the vision for the new hospital.

Kindred will manage the day-to-day operations of the new hospital. A board of directors composed of representatives of the three entities will provide oversight.

“Kindred’s experience in operating inpatient rehabilitation hospitals will complement the highly regarded patient care services that Duke and WakeMed currently provide, resulting in a collaboration that will improve health outcomes, access to rehabilitation inpatient and clinical integration, ”said Jason Zachariah, President and COO of Kindred. “We are pleased to work with two leading healthcare providers in the North Carolina Triangle and surrounding areas to provide quality post-acute care resources for the benefit of the community.

The facility is expected to open in 2023, subject to necessary regulatory and other approvals.

Plant design

The 62,000-square-foot free-standing hospital will feature private bedrooms and bathrooms, with designated wings for patients with orthopedic issues, stroke and other neurological conditions. The main therapy room will be located on the first floor with a therapy room, rooms for multiple therapy protocols, private therapy rooms, a kitchen therapy room and an “Activities of Daily Living” therapy suite. Additional therapy rooms will be located on the second floor for convenient access to therapy for the entire patient population.

The configuration of the facility entirely in a private room will allow space for the privacy, comfort and treatment needs of patients. The design of the room will allow nurses and therapists to have sufficient space for treatment and equipment while still providing space for the presence of the patient’s family. The rooms are designed to optimally meet the needs of each patient and improve the quality of their care.

The design has been implemented in several Kindred rehabilitation hospitals across the country with significant success in improving patient outcomes and improving their quality of life and the ability to return home or to a level lower care after treatment.
