As Data Reporting Halts, Iowa Nursing Home Outbreaks Continue to Rise

The number of Iowa nursing home residents and workers infected with a currently active COVID-19 outbreak has increased 43% in the past two weeks to nearly 2,200.

According to the Iowa Department of Public Health, there are 114 nursing homes in Iowa in an outbreak state this week, which equates to about 1 in 4 nursing homes in Iowa. The number households in an epidemic state increased by 33% compared to the 86 reported by the IDPH two weeks ago.

There are now 2,197 infections associated with the 114 active outbreaks.

Statewide, only 33% of nursing home workers have been fully vaccinated and given a booster, according to the Medicare and Medicaid Service Centers.

The rise in infections and outbreaks coincides with plans by the Iowa Department of Public Health to stop collecting data from Iowa nursing homes on COVID-19 infections among residents and staff. . This week’s report represents the state’s latest public update on the location of outbreaks in Iowa’s healthcare facilities.

The largest active outbreak in any care facility in Iowa continues to be at the state-run Iowa Veterans Home. Three weeks ago there were 55 infections associated with the current outbreak at home. This week, IDPH reported 95 infections linked to the outbreak.

This is the seventh outbreak of COVID-19 at the Iowa Veterans Home, which has seen more outbreaks than any other care facility in Iowa. The previous six outbreaks at the Marshall County home have resulted in at least 212 infections.

While 96% of Iowa Veterans Home residents were fully vaccinated, only about 50% of staff were fully vaccinated and received a booster shot, according to data from the Medicare and Medicaid Service Centers.

During the pandemic, seven residents of the Iowa Veterans Home died of COVID-19, according to CMS.
