Arkansas Rural Health Scholarship Awarded at University of Arkansas for Medical Science Student
SMALL ROCK, Arch., February 15, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — Rhys BranmanMD and the team at Little Rock Cosmetic Surgery are pleased to announce that they have awarded the first annual award Arkansas Rural Health Scholarship at Tupa Wayfirst-year medical student pursuing his medical doctorate at University of Arkansas for medical science.
“We are proud to have a small part in supporting Lane’s efforts to improve medicine in Arkansas“, said Dr. Branman. “We have a widespread need to retain our local talent, and as an intelligent, thoughtful and kind medical student with a particular interest in serving rural communities, Lane is the ideal recipient for this stock Exchange. “
The Arkansas Rural Health Scholarship is designed to alleviate some of the costs of pursuing a medical degree for students interested in serving rural areas Arkansas. Recipients have the option of using the $2,500 scholarship for costs related to their graduation, such as tuition, supplies and textbooks, required technology, transportation costs, or housing. Mr. Tupa says he plans to use the award to cover tuition fees.
Although the scholarship has received applications from students across ArkansasDr. Branman said Mr. Tupa’s candidacy stood out for his keen interest in rural health issues facing Arkansas communities.
“Lane is a promising student who I believe will improve health care in Arkansas“, said Dr. Branman. “I see this as an investment in our collective future.”
During his undergraduate studies at Henderson State University, Mr. Tupa was a brilliant scholar who was highly regarded by his teachers. He was also president of the pre-med student club and treasurer of the chemistry club. As well as being well prepared for medical school, the scholar says his rural upbringing Arkansas gave him insight into the challenges facing patients and physicians in these areas.
“People are brought up with the belief that you shouldn’t go to the doctor unless it’s an emergency… This way of thinking is only reinforced by the shortage of doctors and the places where poverty levels are high. If someone has to drive an hour to see a doctor, they are more likely to decide to put it off and deal with the consequences later. This is especially true if they have to time off from work to get to an appointment,” Tupa said. “I hope I can help fill the lack of access to health care that exists in many rural communities like the one in which I grew up.”
He added that he takes a caring and patient approach to each new person he meets. “In my experience, if you take enough time, you can usually find at least one thing in common with most people, and I think that’s really the first step to understanding them as a person.”
Dr. Branman founded the Arkansas Rural Health Fellowship to encourage the next generation of Arkansas medical providers to serve rural areas, where demand for primary care is growing faster than supply. The scholarship will be offered annually to a first-year medical or nursing student committed to rural practice Arkansas.
